a few words from our founder, Aixa m. pascual

In 2017, I sought out lovers of Latin American literature.  On a cold January evening they showed up,  and we launched our reading club. And then they kept showing up, for fascinating discussions around themes found in contemporary novels from Latin America and Spain. This week, our Club de lectura celebrated three years. All in all, we’ve read 35 books.

The group is a mix, with participants from the U.S. and many Latin American countries. Many have been with us from its inception; some  attend occasionally; others come and go. Along the way, we’ve created a tight-knight community of bibliophiles bound by much more than our love for sublime works of fiction.

We’ve read the essential  masterpieces from our time,  as well as classics going back to 1929, interspersed with other splendid books. My favorites include: Crónica de una muerte anunciada, Doña Bárbara, El ruido de las cosas al caer, Huasipungo, La noche de la usina and Noviembre. For next month, we’re reading El Túnel, a book I read back in high school.
